SCI Distributes Issue Briefs on Federalism and State Lessons on Capitol Hill
In an effort to keep federal officials aware of the role of states, the value of state experience in the national health reform debate, and the importance of the federal-state partnership in designing, implementing, and sustaining health reform policy to ensure the greatest potential for success, the SCI team went to Capitol Hill to distribute issue briefs to nearly 700 legislative staff and all health-related committees on April 30. These briefs, A Case for Federalism and Lessons Learned from State Reforms, highlight key elements that should be considered for such a partnership and are excerpted from SCI’s 2009 State of the States publication.
A Case for Federalism looks at the relative strengths of states and the federal government, and outlines a potential framework for balancing the two, informed by a growing body of research based on state reform efforts.
Lessons Learned from State Reforms highlights valuable lessons from state health reform efforts throughout the
United States, exploring financing issues, the concept of an individual mandate, and the relationship between reducing costs, improving quality and expanding coverage.
As the national health reform debate continues to evolve, SCI will continue to pursue efforts to assure that the voices of the states are heard during national health reform discussions and negotiations.
