AcademyHealth’s State Health Research and Policy Interest Group Breakfast will be held on February 3 from 7:00 a.m.-8:45 a.m., at the J.W. Marriott,
Washington, D.C, on the second day of the National Health Policy Conference. This session will examine recent state strategies to increase value in the health care system. It will focus on state efforts to contain costs while improving the quality of health care and expanding access. Panelists will provide insight on lessons learned at the State level that may inform the upcoming Federal discussion.

Ms. Riley will discuss a number of Maine's cost containment and quality improvement efforts, including the Maine Quality Forum and Health Dialog, Maine's Health InfoNet, and their pilot medical home payment reform initiative.

Mr. Magistro will discuss his work on the Pennsylvania Chronic Care Initiative, focusing on the core elements of the initiative and how state policymakers can encourage related activities in their states.
Aaron McKethan, Ph.D., research director, The Engelberg Center for Health Care Reform, The Brookings Institution
Dr. McKethan will provide a synthesis of the work done under a joint Brookings/National Academy for State Health Policy project entitled "Supporting the Work of State Agencies that Purchase Health Coverage for State Employees." He will specifically discuss state efforts to align incentives for health plans and providers, engage and equip consumers to make better health care choices, and work collaboratively with other public and private payers to develop coordinated quality improvement programs.
