Cyber Seminar on the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005

State Coverage Initiatives will host a cyber seminar entitled “The Deficit Reduction Act of 2005: Implications and Opportunities for State Coverage Efforts” on June 7, 2006 from 1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. EDST.

In February 2006, President George W. Bush signed Public Law 109-171 known as the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 (DRA). The DRA authorizes states to implement a variety of changes to their Medicaid programs.  How might states take advantage of this new flexibility? What impact will the DRA have on states’ use of Section 1115 waivers?  What other implications does the DRA have for state Medicaid programs and future efforts to cover the uninsured?

Expert Answers

Barbara Coulter Edwards, Principal at Health Management Associates and the former Medicaid Director for the State of Ohio will lead the discussion. State leaders and health policy experts, including Robin Rudowitz, Principal Policy Analyst, Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured; Nancy V. Atkins, Commissioner, Bureau for Medical Services, State of West Virginia and chair of the National Association of State Medicaid Directors; Shannon Turner, Commissioner, Kentucky Department of Medicaid Services; and Matthew Salo, Director of Health Legislation, National Governors Association, will discuss the implications of the Act.
