Report Finds Trend Among States Tackling Costs, Quality, and Access in Reform Efforts
While election year politics and the decline in the economy slowed the rate of health reforms enacted in states last year, the new State Coverage Initiatives’ (SCI) State of the States report finds many states nevertheless made significant progress in 2008.
Report authors offer multiple insights from scenarios and trends occurring in states in 2008. Among them:
- Increasing numbers of uninsured add to pressure on state budgets
- Emerging trends among states to address cost and quality, along with access
- Renewed efforts to enroll eligible residents in the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP)
- An increase in state reform efforts seeking to help small business owners and their employees
The State of the States 2009 report, Charting the Course: Preparing for the Future, Learning from the Past, notes that state legislators will closely watch the possibility of federal health reform, first to see if states get needed funding to help replenish evaporating state Medicaid funds, and then to see how more sweeping health reform plans may affect their states.

RWJF Investigator Awards in Health Policy Research Call for Applications
Submission Deadline: March 25, 2009
The RWJF Investigator Awards in Health Policy Research, a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, is designed to support scholars from a range of fields who have innovative projects that can enhance policy to improve health or health care in the U.S. Unlike most NIH or NSF funding opportunities, the program, which provides grants of up to $335,000 for policy-relevant projects of 2-4 years' duration, is not intended to support a discrete research project but rather to allow a scholar to devote considerable time to a project of greater scope than the usual RO1 grant. The program also offers an unrivaled opportunity to meet, interact, and often collaborate with outstanding scholars in varied fields including medicine, nursing, public health, economics, political science, sociology, law, epidemiology, history, and journalism, among others.
The Call for Applications, tips for applicants, and samples of past successful letters of intent are posted on our website at www.investigatorawards.org. The deadline for receipt of 4-page letters of intent is March 25, 2009. Please feel free to contact the national program office at depdir@ifh.rutgers.edu if you have questions or need assistance.
