Hot Topic: Community Living Assistance Services and Support Act (CLASS Act)

A historically overlooked issue in health care reform, long-term care services and supports, has generated a great deal of interest with the inclusion of the Community Living Assistance Services and Support (CLASS) Act in pending legislation in both the Senate’s The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (H.R. 3590) and the House's The Affordable Health Care For America Act (H.R. 3962). While the future of health reform remains uncertain, the CLASS Act has generated attention to the complexities of financing long-term care.

HCFO released a findings brief based on a study by Vincent Mor, Ph.D., Brown University, and colleagues that examines the rehospitalization experience of patients discharged to a skilled nursing facility.

The National Center for Health Statistics released a report on racial differences in nursing home residents and the Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality released two reports examining emergency department utilization by crash victims and rural hospital utilization by Medicare patients.

David C. Grabowski, Ph.D., associate professor at Harvard Medical School, was the principal investigator for a HCFO grant that examined the impact of assisted living growth on the market for nursing home care.

Jack Hadley, Ph.D., and colleagues published the article, “Medicare Fees and the Volume of Physicians’ Services” in the Winter 2009/2010 issue of Inquiry.

Michael Chernew, Ph.D., and colleagues published the article, “Geographic Correlation between Large-Firm Commercial Spending and Medicare Spending,” in the February 2010 issue of The American Journal of Managed Care.

Randall Brown, Ph.D., was quoted in the February 4 BusinessWeek article, “Take Your Meds, Exercise—and Spend Billions.”

The article, “What Does it Cost Physician Practices to Interact with Health Insurance Plans?” by Lawrence P. Casalino, Ph.D., and colleagues was one of the top-viewed Health Affairs articles in 2009.

Findings from a HCFO study led by Bradley Herring, Ph.D., were highlighted in the February 2 The Incidental Economist blog post, “Mark Pauly on Health Reform.

The article, “What Does it Cost Physician Practices to Interact with Health Insurance Plans?” by Lawrence P. Casalino, Ph.D., and colleagues was voted one of the top five most influential articles funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in 2009 by individuals who voted for more than three articles.

The December 31 New England Journal of Medicine article, “'Play-or-Pay’ Insurance Reforms for Employers—Confusion and Inequity,” by Bradley Herring, Ph.D., and Mark Pauly, Ph.D., was highlighted by the Galen Institute.

Bruce Stuart, Ph.D., was quoted in the January 15 Health Behavior News Service article, “'Doughnut Hole’ Causes Seniors to Skip Diabetes Meds."
