A historically overlooked issue in health care reform, long-term care
services and supports, has generated a great deal of interest with the
inclusion of the Community Living Assistance Services and Support
(CLASS) Act in pending legislation in both the Senate’s The Patient
Protection and Affordable Care Act (H.R. 3590) and the House's The
Affordable Health Care For America Act (H.R. 3962). While the future of
health reform remains uncertain, the CLASS Act has generated attention
to the complexities of financing long-term care.

| HCFO Releases a New Findings Brief |

|
HCFO released a findings brief based on a study by Vincent Mor, Ph.D.,
Brown University, and colleagues that examines the rehospitalization
experience of patients discharged to a skilled nursing facility.

|
The National Center for Health Statistics released a report on racial
differences in nursing home residents and the Agency for Healthcare
Research & Quality released two reports examining emergency
department utilization by crash victims and rural hospital utilization
by Medicare patients.

David C. Grabowski, Ph.D., associate professor at Harvard Medical
School, was the principal investigator for a HCFO grant that examined
the impact of assisted living growth on the market for nursing home
care.

The December 31 New England Journal of Medicine article, “'Play-or-Pay’ Insurance Reforms for Employers—Confusion and Inequity,” by Bradley Herring, Ph.D., and Mark Pauly, Ph.D., was highlighted by the Galen Institute.
